The Salt Lake City School District has developed an equity team in order to ensure all students are receiving the best education possible. We, as a team, have looked at disseminated information that clearly shows an achievement gap within minority sub-groups, specifically black children. This team is comprised of several school teacher, administrators, counselors, and district personel. We have met monthly for the past two years to discuss ways to close this gap. Take a look at one of our newletters.

Hey, That sounds like a neat thing to be a part of. I think a being on a team like that can help to understand all that their still is to achieve in education. Do you enjoy it?
ReplyDeleteI found the book you reviewed "Funds of Knowledge:" at your site, to be interesting. You said, "details of effective pedagogy should be linked to local histories and community contexts." That is a great idea. I might have to order that book.
ReplyDeleteI ordered and read "Funds of Knowledge". I loved it! Great thoughts. Thank you for the link.
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed with the movie you embedded on Cesar Chavez, done by a student! WOW.
That must be an interesting assignment being on the equity team. I can imagine it being really rewarding. On the other hand, with emotions about immigration being what they are now,I can imagine you may have some ugly conversations from time to time. In my experience, logic and emotion are not always compatable. What matters is the students. Have you been able to develop a plan to help close the gap?
